What does it mean if my Intergas boiler is showing fault code 29 on the display panel

Fault code 29 on Intergas boilers relates to a gas valve fault. Most likely, the relay on the valve needs repairing, or replacing.

Your boiler shows a fault code to help your boiler engineer determine the most likely cause of the fault. This makes repairs much quicker than having to fault find every part in the appliance.

And, it’s also likely that the boiler locks out. That means it’s not going to work until your Gas Safe engineer has fixed the problem at hand. In this case, the lockout is in place as a safety precaution. Continued operation of a boiler with a faulty gas valve is likely to mean that the boiler is dangerous.

Will resetting the boiler fix the gas valve

You shouldn’t be messing with your gas boiler without Gas Safe accreditation. There’s a potentially dangerous problem with your boiler, and you need a qualified professional to come and fix it.

Once they’ve found the problem and fixed it, they’ll reset your boiler. This will clear fault code 29 from the display, and get your boiler working.

What are the most common problems with boiler gas valves

Although the most likely cause of fault code 29 being displayed on your boiler’s control panel is the gas valve relay, there are other things your boiler engineer will want to check, including:

  • Wiring and connections
  • Operation of the valve (i.e. is it sticking?)
  • Gas valve failure

How will my Gas Safe engineer know if the wiring and connections on my gas valve are what’s causing the issue

In order to operate, the gas valve on your boiler needs to communicate with the printed circuit board (PCB). It’s the PCB that controls when the gas valve opens and closes, based on your demand for heating and hot water.

For the gas valve to effectively communicate with the PCB, they’re connected electronically.

Your boiler repair company will test the wiring and connections to and from the gas valve and PCB, checking for any breaks in the circuit. On some occasions, they’ll be able repair wires, and secure electronic connections, to ensure the communication between the gas valve and PCB is stable.

What happens when a gas valve sticks

Another common problem we find with boiler gas valves, is that due to old age, they start sticking. This might mean they’re sticking slightly open (letting gas into the burner when they shouldn’t be), or slightly closed (not letting enough gas into the burner).

Either way, this is going to lead to your boiler working intermittently. The irregularity of the gas supply into the burner is going to mean that the flame sensor recognises there’s a problem. The sensor passes on the signal to the PCB, and the PCB will lock out the boiler.

If my boiler’s gas valve is sticking, can it be fixed

The longer issues like this are left, the worse they become. But, if your gas valve has only recently started sticking, there’s a good chance that your boiler repair company will be able to free the valve.

They’ll be able to check its operation before piecing the boiler back together. After resetting the appliance, fault code 29 will be removed from the control panel, and the boiler will work again.

How will my boiler repair company know if the gas valve needs replacing on my Intergas boiler

Not all gas valve faults can be repaired. For instance, if your boiler engineer can only partially free the valve from sticking, it’s likely they’re going to suggest a replacement.

And, sometimes electrical failures can mean that a replacement is the only option. Your Gas Safe engineer will be able to test the gas valve using a multi-meter, to determine whether it’s receiving power.

If the gas valve isn’t receiving power after all wires have been repaired and connections secured, it’s likely that a new gas valve is going to need to be fitted, to clear the fault code from the display panel on your boiler.

If the gas valve needs replacing to fix fault code 29, how much should I expect to pay

Conent

Gas valves aren’t cheap to replace. For the average Intergas boiler, you should expect to pay around £300 including parts and labour. And, the job will usually be completed within 1 working day, assuming your boiler repair company has direct access to parts from their local supplier.

What could have caused the gas valve to fail in the first place

Before replacing the valve, it’s important to understand what might have caused the problem to occur in the first place.

If it’s a simple case of old age, it’s likely the replacement valve is all that’s needed. However, we find there’s usually a catalyst for boiler components failing. Two typical examples would be excessive boiler vibrations and internal water damage.

Boiler vibrations can come from worn bearings on the fan or pump. Without repairing these bearings alongside the gas valve, it’s likely that the valve and other electronic components are going to fail again soon.

Likewise, internal boiler leaks are a huge problem. If a leak is present, it’s likely to have stemmed from a leaking pump, or a broken heat exchanger.

Either way, your boiler repair company needs to ensure the problem that caused the gas valve failure, is fixed alongside fitting the replacement valve.

My boiler engineer thinks the PCB could be to blame, does that sound correct

The PCB always needs to be discounted when dealing with electronic faults. It’s the PCB that gives and receives signals to tell all electronic components in your boiler when to operate. And, it’s also the component that determines which is the most relevant fault code to display on the control panel.

So, if the PCB is faulty, the fault code could be wrong, or at the very least, inaccurate.

To determine whether it is the PCB causing the issues, your boiler repair company will need to test it. Like they can with all electrical components in your boiler, they’ll be able to do so using a multi-meter.

If the PCB is showing intermittent power, but the connections and wires are all in good condition, it’s likely that it needs replacing.

How much will the PCB cost if I need a replacement

The PCB is one of the most expensive parts on your boiler. Typical replacement costs will be in the region of £450-500.

And, at prices as high as this, it makes sense to ask your engineer for a general boiler health check. If they suspect other expensive parts like the fan, gas valve, pump and heat exchanger are likely to need replacing soon, it might be time to invest in a new and efficient boiler, complete with a long warranty.
