What does the _CL fault code mean on my Vokera boiler?
When a Vokera boiler shows a _CL fault code, it means that the unit needs a service.
Many other fault codes will offer an image on the display panel to help further identify the fault code, but the _CL code doesn’t.
If my boiler shows a _CL fault code, can I fix it by resetting my boiler?
It’s unlikely resetting the boiler in this case is going to rectify the problem.
Boiler fault codes are designed to be displayed when a problem is rectified. Once this problem is rectified, the reset will clear the fault code.
Resets are not designed to fix problems.
Can a boiler be serviced on a DIY basis?
Gas appliances need to be serviced by qualified engineers. Only people that are Gas Safe trained and qualified can legally work on these appliances.
For residential homeowners, working on appliances without accreditation is extremely dangerous – you could be putting your family at risk.
So much so, that there have been instances whereby landlords have been prosecuted after working on appliances themselves, or having unqualified tradesmen work on their appliance.
How often do I need to get my Vokera boiler serviced?
You’ll need to check the terms and conditions supplied with your boiler to determine the exact service interval for your Vokera boiler.
This interval isn’t just specified so that your boiler continues to function. Most boiler manufacturers realise that their boiler units last much longer when they’re regularly serviced.
For that reason, most stipulate that a service needs to be completed at least once a year for the warranty to stand. If you don’t have your Vokera boiler serviced once a year, there’s a good chance that the warranty is going to be void.
Although it’s not required by law, you can ask for a Gas Safety certificate with your service.
This will include details of the service, as well as the Gas Safe number of the engineer and their address. The certificate will act as proof that you’ve been keeping your boiler services up to date.
Why do boilers need to be serviced?
Boilers have lots of mechanical components that can wear out over time. If they become damaged, they’ll need to be replaced.
More importantly, when some parts become damaged, they can cause damage elsewhere.
For instance, a blocked burner could cause explosive ignition, and cause the burner to break. That’s going to lead to an expensive repair bill that could have easily been avoided.
And a widespread problem we see comes from boiler pump seals that have blown. This causes a small leak from the pump. Left untreated this leak can cause damage to a whole host of electrical components.
A typical example would be water damage to the printed circuit board (PCB).
The PCB controls all the electronic components in your boiler. So, when the PCB breaks, there’s a good chance that your boiler will work sporadically or won’t work at all.
The cost to replace the PCB could be more than £500.
This is an expensive repair bill that could have been prevented by an engineer spotting the leak on a service visit.
This is the exact kind of repair bill that brands like Vokera want to avoid, which is why they insist on boilers being serviced regularly.
My boiler is showing another fault code, will the engineer fix this as part of the service?
There’s a good chance that it’s the additional fault code being shown that has led to the _CL service code being shown.
A boiler engineer won’t fix a boiler as part of a service.
So, they’ll need to diagnose and fix the additional fault code (at an additional cost), service the boiler and then clear the fault codes by resetting the boiler.
What will my engineer do when they visit to complete my boiler service?
The first part of a service involves visual checks of boiler components. This is where the engineer will notice things like blocked burners and water damage.
If they do notice these problems, fixing them won’t be part of the service and will instead be at an additional cost.
Once all visual checks are completed, they’ll need to make sure that the boiler is operating safely.
One of the ways the engineer will do this is by completing a flue gas test.
Using a flue gas analyser, they’ll be able to determine if the boiler is burning correctly, and when it is, if the harmful flue gases are being correctly vented from the flue.
What non-crucial tasks should the engineer complete with a boiler service on my Vokera boiler?
Two devices that have become incredibly popular over the last few years are scale reducers and magnetic boiler filters.
Scale reducers are designed to be used in hard water areas. They stop scale build up which can cause expensive damage to boiler parts.
Magnetic system filters catch debris. But, it’s limited to heating sludge that’s usually a build-up of rust from the inside of pipes and radiators.
These filters will fill up over time. Once they’re full, they won’t have the ability to catch any other debris that’s floating around your heating system – that leaves your boiler exposed.
For this reason, if you have a scale reducer or magnetic boiler filter, you’ll want to ask your engineer to clean them out with your boiler service.
How much will it cost to get a service and clear the _CL fault code?
Boiler service costs are directly related to labour. So, the cost will vary through the country.
You should expect to pay £70-100 from smaller and more competitively priced companies. However, large national firms can charge as much as £125-150.
Does it cost more for a one-off boiler service?
You shouldn’t be paying more for a one-off boiler service. However, some companies will charge more if they know there isn’t likely to be any future work in the property.
Like a regular service, expect to pay £70-100.
Remember that this is a small price to pay on an annual basis to ensure that your boiler is working correctly. Spotting problems on a service visit won’t just ensure the warranty is valid but also could save you hundreds on repair bills.
More importantly, tests completed by the engineer such as a flue gas analysis ensures that your boiler and everyone in your property is safe.
How long will it take to complete the service and clear the _CL fault code on my Vokera boiler?
A service for your Vokera boiler is a job that shouldn’t take more than 2 hours.
If parts are needed due to general wear and tear, the cost and time needed to replace them won’t be included.
Do I need a boiler service from a Vokera boiler engineer?
The operation of boilers is standardised. You shouldn’t need to use a Vokera specific engineer (i.e. from their service engineer team) to keep your warranty intact.
However, you should always check that the engineer you are using is Gas Safe registered. You can do that by checking the Gas Safe register.
If your boiler is not gas, you’ll need to check that the boiler engineer has the specific qualification from Gas Safe (i.e. oil or LPG).
