What does the 0F fault code mean on my Viessmann boiler

If you’re having problems with your Viessmann boiler and it’s showing the 0F fault code on the display panel, your appliance is due a service. In many cases, the code may not be shown on the display panel, but instead, is simply logged in the fault history.

Is my boiler dangerous if it’s showing the 0F fault code

Your boiler should be regularly serviced by a heating engineer. This doesn’t just ensure that big breakdowns are avoided, but it also ensures that there’s nothing wrong with your boiler that could lead to it being dangerous.

So, if you’re boiler is showing the 0F fault code, book in a service as soon as possible.

How often should my boiler be serviced

Modern boilers should be serviced in 12 month intervals. If you check your Viessmann boiler’s warranty, it’s likely that part of the terms and conditions state an annual service is required for the brand to honour this warranty.

The reason for this is simple; expensive repairs can be avoided by completing a simple check-up each year. As with most things in life, prevention is better than cure. So, finding a problem before it causes a major issue, is going to mean that your boiler lasts much longer.

A typical example would be a boiler that has a pump that’s leaking. The leak might start off small, causing little or no damage. However, over time, this leak is going to snowball into something much bigger. And as it does, it’s going to lead to expensive repair bills, especially to electronics, that a manufacturer certainly doesn’t want to cover.

A simple health check in the way of an annual service would have highlighted the leak. Your boiler engineer would then have been able to advise the best route forward to fix the issue, avoiding expensive repair bills.

Can I service my boiler myself

You shouldn’t attempt to work on gas appliances, unless you are qualified with Gas Safe. Gas appliances can be extremely dangerous. Not only could you cause further damage by attempting to service your boiler without experience, it’s unlikely you’ll pick up on important issues that need to be fixed, nor have the tools (such as a flue gas analyser) to determine whether your boiler is operating safely.

There are plenty of Gas Safe companies that you can contact to get your boiler serviced to clear the 0F fault code, and then book them in on an annual basis.

If I reset my boiler, is that going to clear the 0F fault code

If you reset your boiler, this won’t clear the 0F fault code, and it’s not advisable. The reset on your Viessmann boiler is only designed to be used once the problem on your appliance as been fixed; it’s not a method of fixing a boiler.

Your boiler servicing company will reset your boiler once they’ve completed the service, and this will clear the fault code from the display panel and fault history.

If I need a boiler service, how much is it likely to cost

A typical service from a local engineer is going to cost in the region of £80-100. There are a range of factors that affect the cost including whether the company is VAT registered, and whereabouts in the country you’re located, as labour rates vary by area.

It’s worth noting that local engineers specialising in repairs and servicing are likely to be cheaper than be national firms. National boiler installation and repair firms are likely to charge £120 or more.

And, that’s assuming they’ll do a one-off and fixed price service. Many of these companies are only interested in long service contracts that can cost upwards of £15 per month, and don’t include essential repairs.

Can any heating engineer or plumber complete a service on my gas boiler

No, the company and/or individual completing the service on your boiler needs to be Gas Safe accredited. You can check the company’s or individual’s name on the Gas Safe Register, to confirm that they’re qualified to work on your boiler.

What should I expect from my engineer on the day of the service

Don’t be afraid to ask to see your boiler engineer’s Gas Safe card. You’ll be able to search the number on the card on the Gas Safe Register to confirm they are in fact, who they say they are.

Once confirmed, your boiler engineer will complete the service. They’ll assess your boiler, as well as carrying out a few tests to check the general operation of your appliance.

As an example, they’ll check things like the flue, ensuring flue gas levels and temperatures are correct. They’ll do this using a flue gas analyser. With some newer analysers, instant print-outs are available.

The main things your boiler service engineer is looking for, is anything related to gas safety, as well as any part that if not seen too, is going to lead to expensive repair bills.

At the end of the service, assuming the boiler is deemed fit to operate, your boiler engineer will reset the appliance to get it working again.

Besides a simple service, is there anything else I can get done to protect my boiler

As your engineer is servicing your boiler, it’s likely they’ll pick up on any components that are likely to cause issues in the future or need repairing now. On many occasions, this might just be an advisory note, much like you’d have on a MOT certificate for a car.

If possible, it’s worth having your boiler engineer give your appliance a general health check. A simple 5 minute inspection might highlight problems that could lead to repair bills costing hundreds of pounds in the long-term.

Are repair bills included as part of a boiler service

If you know there is a problem with your boiler that needs repairing, you shouldn’t be trying to fool your engineer into thinking a quick service is needed.

Servicing and repairs are separate. The idea behind a service is to prolong the life of your boiler, and make sure if it’s safe. If there are repairs that are needed before the boiler can be reset, your boiler servicing company will let you know, and will expect payment to rectify any issues, as well payment for the service.

What else can my boiler servicing company do to prolong the life of my boiler

If your boiler is well within warranty and causes little in the way of problems, it makes sense to protect it in whatever way possible.

One of the most important things your engineer can do, is hot flush the system with chemicals, dose your system with inhibitor, and then fit a magnetic system filter.

The hot flush will remove heating sludge from the system, that blocks up expensive components. Once flushed, central heating inhibitor helps to break down any heating sludge that starts to circulate around your heating system.

Now in manageable chunks thanks to the inhibitor, your magnetic system filter can catch these heating sludge particles to protect your boiler.

Magnetic system filters have a capacity, so they need to be cleaned out. We’d advise having your filter cleaned out with every annual boiler service.

If your central heating system water is of an unexceptable qualifty, yould have a central heating power flush.
