What does fault code 5 mean on Intergas boilers

Fault code 5 on Intergas boilers relates to a poor flame signal. This differs slightly from other fault codes that might suggest no flame signal, or the flame going out during operation.

Could a reset fix my boiler

A reset will clear the fault code from the display panel, only after the problem has been fixed. You shouldn’t be using the reset button to try and fix a problem.

There’s a reason the boiler has locked out after establishing there’s a fault; it’s a safety precaution. In the case of fault code 5, there’s potentially a problem with the boiler’s ability to vent harmful gases, or the gas supply. As continued operation could be dangerous, the boiler goes into fault mode.

The only people qualified to fix gas boilers, are Gas Safe engineers. So, instead of trying to reset your boiler; call a Gas Safe repair company. They’ll diagnose the fault, fix it, and then reset your boiler which will clear the 5 fault code from the display panel.

What could cause fault code to be displayed on the control panel

Once on-site, your emergency boiler repair company will need to start fault-finding to determine what’s causing the problem.

This isn’t an easy problem to diagnose, as several things could have caused it. They may need to check:

  • Gas pressure to your boiler
  • The gas valve
  • Airways, including the condensate pipe and flue
  • The burner

How would gas pressure cause fault code 5 to be displayed on my boiler

If gas pressure to your boiler is incorrect, it won’t be able to produce a solid flame. High gas pressure is going to lead to your boiler locking out as a safety precaution. And, low gas pressure is going to mean that your boiler struggles to establish a flame.

Your boiler repair company will need to ensure that the gas run is clear of debris, and that includes checking that there aren’t blockages in the meter. On some occasions, a faulty meter regulator could be restricting the flow of gas, even when it shouldn’t. Swapping out the old regulator for a new one, is going to ensure that gas can flow freely.

If the gas valve is causing the issue with my boiler, can it be fixed

When fault code 5 is being shown on your boiler’s control panel, the gas valve needs to be checked. The gas valve is a part that’s hard wearing but is incredibly overworked.

The valve responds to commands from the printed circuit board (PCB), to open and close as your demand for heating and hot water changes. That allows gas into the burner when necessary.

However, due to this being a moving part, they’re prone to getting stuck. And, if your gas valve gets stuck, that’s going to result in the flow of gas being restricted.

In the case of fault code 5, it’s likely the valve is stuck so it can’t open fully. That’s restricting the flow of gas to the burner and means that the flame signal the sensor is receiving, is going to be weak.

Your boiler engineer can sometimes free the valve, to enable a free-flow of gas once more. However, if the valve can’t be freed, a new one will need to be fitted.

I need a new gas valve in my Intergas boiler, how much is this going to cost

If your boiler repair company decides that the operation of the current gas valve is intermittent and can’t be improved, they’ll suggest a replacement. The cost including parts and labour, is likely to be in the region of £300.

How can the airways contribute to fault code 5 being displayed

Your boiler needs to “breathe” in order to operate. If it’s not breathing, it’s not venting harmful gases from your property, and that’s dangerous. Upon noticing the potential danger, the PCB is going to lockout the boiler immediately.

So, your boiler repair company will need to check the two main airways for obstructions, which are the:

  • Flue
  • Condensate pipe

Even the smallest blockage in these airways is going to lead to a boiler lockout. The most common blockage is going to be in the condensate pipe in winter. The condensed gases leaving the boiler via this pipe are prone to freezing, causing a blockage.

If this is the case, thawing out the pipe and resetting the boiler is going to fix the problem. To prevent this from happening again, the pipes can be lagged by your repair company.

How could the burner cause fault code 5 to be displayed

The next point of call is to check the burner. If the burner is in poor condition or blocked, it’s not going to be able to maintain a solid flame, and that’s going to lead to a boiler lockout.

Typically, it’s only extremely old burners that build-up enough debris to cause a problem. If this is the case, the burner can be cleaned out manually to improve its efficiency in terms of combustion.

However, there’s a fragile part in the burner called a pilot jet. Given these jets are incredibly small, it doesn’t take much to block them up. And, that means a pilot jet blockage can even happen on brand new boilers.

If your boiler engineer suspects the pilot jet as being the issue, they have two options:

  • Remove the pilot jet and clean it, ensuring there is no blockage
  • Whereby the pilot jet blockage can’t be removed, replace the jet.

After ensuring the pilot jet is free of blockages, resetting your boiler will clear fault code 5 and get it working again.

Is there anything else that could cause fault code 5 to be displayed on my boiler

Not all fault code fixes are as obvious as they seem. If nothing above rectifies the issue, your boiler engineer will want to test the flame sensor. A faulty flame sensor is going to lead to the wrong signals being passed onto the PCB. So, the PCB could be shutting down the boiler as it thinks the flame is weak, even though it’s the signal from the flame sensor that’s the problem.

And, that leads us to the PCB. The PCB gives and receives signals to control all components in your boiler, and it even determines which is the most suitable fault code to be displayed.

So, if the PCB is faulty, then it might be indicating a problem elsewhere in the boiler, even though it’s this component that’s the issue.

Your boiler engineer will be able to test the PCB using a multi-meter. This ensures it’s getting power and if it’s not, a PCB replacement may be in order.

Typically, you should expect to pay £400-500 for a replacement PCB in your Intergas boiler.
