What does the F.82 fault code mean on my Glow-Worm boiler

When your Glow-Worm develops a problem, it should display a fault code on the display panel. In the case of the F.82 fault code, it’s likely your boiler will also lock out.

The F.82 fault code relates to a problem with the gas valve. As this is a potentially dangerous fault if the boiler was to continue to operate, the lock out in this instance, is to make sure the boiler isn’t operating dangerously. The problem here is with the gas valve switching off or closing when it shouldn’t be.

Will I need a new boiler if mine has a problem with the gas valve

Unless multiple components in your boiler are likely to fail soon, it’s unlikely that you’ll need a replacement boiler. In some instances, the gas valve can be fixed. In others, it’s likely your boiler repair company is going to suggest replacing the gas valve to clear the F.82 fault code.

What does the gas valve do on my boiler

The gas valve receives gas via the mains copper pipework. As you turn on hot taps, or turn up your thermostat, the valve will open to provide sufficient gas for the burner. And as you turn taps or your thermostat down or off, it limits the supply of gas, or cuts it out completely.

What are the probable causes that lead to the F.82 fault code being displayed on my Glow-Worm boiler

The problem here is with the gas valve closing. So, the gas valve could be:

  • Leaking, or “letting-by”
  • Stuck partially open
  • Completely faulty

But, if your Gas Safe boiler repair engineer doesn’t think any of the above are the case, the issue could lie with:

  • Delayed shut down of the gas valve, or extinguishing of the flame
  • Moisture on the electronics
  • amaged electrical wiring and/or connections
  • The printed circuit board (PCB)

Can I reset my Glow-Worm boiler to clear the F.82 fault code

You shouldn’t attempt you reset your boiler to try and fix the fault. The reset function on your Glow-Worm boiler is designed to be used when the problem has been fixed. If you attempt to reset your boiler, you could get it working temporarily. With a potential gas leak, that means you’ll have a dangerous appliance operating in your property.

Instead, you should speak to an emergency boiler repair company. They’ll be able to isolate the problem and fix it. Once they’ve tested the boiler, they’ll be able to reset it to clear the F.82 fault code from the display panel.

Can a gas valve that’s leaking or stuck partially open be fixed

On some occasions, your boiler repair company will be able to fix the gas valve on your Glow-Worm boiler. Gas valves are mechanical components. That means that over time, they can seize, or get partially stuck.

So, there’s a chance that your boiler engineer will be able to free up the valve, rather than having to replace it with a new one.

However, as this is a component that supplies the flow of gas, which can be dangerous, they’ll want to be 100% certain that the problem isn’t going to occur again.

If they notice excessive wear on the gas valve, it’s likely they’re going to suggest a replacement.

How much does a replacement gas valve cost on a Glow-Worm boiler

Gas valves are not cheap. For a replacement valve, you should expect to budget around £300. This will cover both parts and labour.

With expensive repairs, it makes sense to have your boiler engineer check over the rest of your boiler. If multiple components are going to need replacing soon, it might be better to consider getting some replacement quotes, rather than repairing an old and tired boiler.

Why would moisture be on the electronics

Moisture is a large-scale killer of boilers. Typically, we find that small boiler leaks are all that’s needed to ruin electronic components, wiring and connections.

If your boiler engineer suspects that a small leak has caused water damage to the gas valve’s electronics, they’ll need to find and fix the leak first. If they don’t, the same issue is going to arise again in the future.

How do I know if I have a leak

Besides obvious pooling of water below your boiler, have you noticed the boiler’s pressure dropping on a regular basis?

It’s the water in your heating system that creates pressure. This is then displayed on the pressure gauge. And typically, we’d expect the pressure on your Glow-Worm boiler to be around 1.5 bar. If it’s below this and is slowing decreasing, it’s likely there’s a leak that needs to be found and fixed.

Where do small leaks come from in my boiler

There are two main culprits when it comes to leaks that are inside a boiler:

  • The pump
  • The heat exchanger

Depending on which one is causing the problem, will determine what the fix is (and how much it costs).

Why is my pump leaking

If it’s your pump that’s leaking, the most probable cause, is that the pump seals have blown. This might be due to a flow setting that’s too high, or too much pressure in the system.

Another possibility is that sludge has blocked up the pump, causing it to be overworked.

As the water leaks onto electrical components, it’s going to cause damage.

Manufacturers of quality pumps do offer service kits. But, if your pump is beyond repair, a replacement is going to be needed.

How do I fix my central heating pump

Your engineer first, needs to check that the speed setting isn’t too high for your property, and that the boiler’s pressure is correct.

If they are correct, they’ll need to take apart the pump and check the unit for a blockage. This can be removed manually, but preventative measures need to be put into place to stop this happening again.

They’ll hot flush your system to get rid of existing sludge. They’ll dose your system with central heating inhibitor to break down any future sludge. Finally, a boiler filter will be fitted to catch this broken-down debris.

Not all pumps can be fixed. If yours can’t, it’s likely a new one is going to cost £250-300, including parts and installation.

How do wires and connections become damaged

Besides an obvious boiler leak, your engineer will need to check for vibrations. If your boiler is noisier than usual, the shaft/bearings on either the pump or fan could be worn and causing each component to strain. As the bearing wears, the appliance becomes noisier and vibrates more.

Due to wires and connections being so fragile, they can get damaged, or worked loose.

Your boiler repair company will need to find the cause and replace any offending parts. They’ll then need to re-secure or replace any dodgy wires and connections to clear the F.82 fault code on your boiler.

What does the PCB have to do with a gas valve fault

The PCB controls all electronic components. So, when there’s a fault, there’s always the possibility that the PCB could be to blame.

The fault here could lie with delayed closing of the gas valve. And, the gas valve gets its signal to close, from the PCB. So, your engineer needs to the test the PCB.

They can do this by using a multi-meter. This ensures that the PCB is getting power.

If they determine the PCB has failed, a new one will need to be installed. For a PCB replacement, you should expect to pay somewhere in the region of £450-£500.
